In a bid to understand his environment better, man has created many virtual entities to contain every knowledge learned. This is quite significant in his quest to make meaning from everything that exists around him. Even in the good book man’s first job which was given by God to him is to give names— which are virtual, to all the animals that exist. Numbers are again an entity man created to understand the universe better. It can be defined as a mathematical entity that is utilized to label, count, or measure qualities and quantities in our environment. Numbers can be written in words according to different languages but most symbols are used to represent these numerical items. For example, the symbol “1” is used to represent a single item, it is written as “one” in the English Language but as “un” in French.
Numbers are utilized for several purposes, apart from counting and measurement, they can also be used for ordering, coding, with labeling. Historically, almost every known civilization has a numbering system but the globally accepted numeral system is the one sourced from Hindu-Arabic culture. The numeral system enables its users to represent any number he can come up with by just combining ten basic numeric symbols which are known as digits. In man’s quest of using numbers to solve daily problems, he developed a subject called Mathematics. Mathematicians after long years of studying the subject have developed different types of numbers to help in their logical reasoning.
These numbers include negative numbers, rational numbers, real numbers, and so on. The study into numbers has exposed some characteristic behavior of numbers like the additional relationship between 5 and 10, again the divisive peculiarity of 2. This study proved that every whole number can be grouped into either of two groups based on their divisibility property of the number with 2. These groups are Even numbers and Odd numbers. Even numbers are integers that can be divided by 2 to give a whole number, this includes, 2, 4, 6, 8, etc. While odd numbers though integers, cannot be halved by the number 2 to give a whole number as the result, this includes, 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, etc. Zero is also an even number since when you divide zero by 2, you get zero, which is again an integer.
Fractions and decimals are not considered to be odd or even but negative numbers can be classified to be odd or even. The exact amount of the even/odd numbers between a given range can be determined. For example, the total even numbers between 1 and 999 are 499. It can be easily solved by dividing the total numbers by 2, if this was done, what we get will be a decimal, 499.5.
However, since the starting and ending of the numbers are odd, that means odd numbers will be more than the even numbers in this range by 1. You can use this to quickly determine the number of odd or even numbers in a number range. When it comes to numerals patterns, there is always logic to it.
